The sustainability of Cannabis

One thing people are curious about is sustainability. With cannabis growing faster than ever before, and with the legalization federally still being a major thing, more and more places are passing bills that regulate the use of this recreationally.

But is it sustainable for the environment? While marijuana has been previously associated with being eco friendly, the industry is not that sustainable, but there are people and companies that are making the chances, moving them in a more eco-friendly way.

Why It’s Not sustainable

The current industry is very competitive, with most companies aiming to incorporate new products into this market a lot faster than before, but the problem is, the carbon footprint is the last thing people think about.

That’s why these are some of the major factors that can impact the sustainability of cannabis.

First, is the waste management. Hemp doesn’t have a lot of THC, which is why it’s allowed by many people who are in states that aren’t legal.  This also does contribute to the state though. At this time, the goal should be for a 50/50 ratio of the waste that they have.  you also wan

t to make sure that you factor in other problems too, such as bleaching the chemicals, which then makes it worse, since that means that it’s in your disposal. That also means that most of this is sent to the landfill, or currently is also incinerated.

The second issue is pesticides. This is something that protects the crops, but it comes with the downside of you’re going to pollute the water and vegetation nearby. Plus, the residue does remain on the plants, impacting their health. Many of the pesticides that are used within the cannabis industry are considered hazardous by the WHO.

Use of fertilizers is another problem. Fertilizers help with growing, but they do impact your soil, killing various microorganisms and it makes it hard for life to be sustained.

It also does have larger levels of consumption of energy. You need specific lamps for this to help cannabis photosynthesize, but the problem is that these lamps are complex, and it uses the same power to power almost 2 million homes every single year.

Are there sustainability Trends

If you’re worried about sustainability, you’re not alone. There are certain retailers that are using different means to ensure that cannabis is a greener experience.

The first, is proper packaging that’s greener. The problem with current cannabis packaging is that it’s not very green, with most of this being tossed into the ocean, and it will ultimately harm us. Most people are turning to packaging that’s greener, easy to recycle, and a lot more compostable. This keeps the product quality there, without causing issues with sustainability.

Some of the greener options include:

  • Paper,
  • Glass
  • Plastics that are recycled
  • Hemp

They are also using regenerative farming. Current cannabis farming processes are abusive to the ground and it strips the resources, which is why many are using different ways to ensure that the practice is regenerative to the ground.

Some of the ways that they do this include:

  • Rotating crops
  • Choosing the collection season
  • Avoiding fertilizers and pesticides

The process does prevent the loss of nutrients, and it also allows you to sustain life better.

Plus, with more and more using greenhouses to offer the indoor growing experience without destroying the energy that we use, there are more and more green trends being used for cannabis than ever before, which allows for a greener, better world, and bigger changes as well too.
